SignForward are unique in the UK in providing short courses in ‘International Sign’, which is the communication method used between deaf people and sign language users from different countries. The course is recommended for those who already have advanced skill in any sign language e.g UK citizens who have obtained BSL NVQ3. Those who use British Sign Language in work or at home on a daily basis (such as BSL interpreters and deaf people) would also benefit from this course.
Contrary to popular belief, many different sign languages exist around the world, ranging across different countries. International Sign is a form of signing that is globally recognised and understood, especially within Europe. It has been compared with Esperanto, and some academics may argue that it is reminiscent of Pidgin and/or Creole languages. Others believe that it is a purely visual method of signs, using only certain grammatical elements of sign languages which advanced sign language users are able to understand.
Sign language and deaf people actually cross more language barriers globally than hearing people using speech – an international advantage opens up a new realm of possibilities and which many sign language users treasure. Imagine going abroad and being able to communicate immediately with the local sign language community without having to rely on an interpreter or one of those tedious three-way conversations!
The UK has become increasingly multi-cultural and this looks set to continue. From immigrants to European workers from the ‘new EU’ countries, a new wave of deaf internationals are moving to live, study and work here, but can struggle to access opportunities and services without adequate English/BSL skills. Learning International Sign is the key way to embrace them and overcome communication barriers – a unique skill which will become increasingly in demand
At present, we provide a two-day weekend course of basic International Sign held at different locations, for a minimum number of eight participants. Whenever there is sufficient demand for a workshop to be held in a certain region/area we will consult you regarding your availability and book the most mutually accessible venue for all interested parties. You will then be sent relevant information and materials. Upon completion of the workshop and a short, simple assessment you will be given a SignForward certificate in Basic International Sign.
There are plans to introduce intermediate and advanced International Sign workshops in the near future, to match course popularity and meet demand.
The price for the full two day course is £220
